Seven of the best... history podcasts
Dan Snow’s History Hit
Surely the king of history podcasts. Dan’s enthusiasm absolutely screams out your earphones in frequently updated episodes spanning thousands of years of human history.
Revolutions
Absolutely fascinating deep dives into some of the key turning points in recent history. Hearing events slowly unfold, action by inaction, is beautiful stuff.
You're Dead To Me
This is such a fun podcast. The format keeps it moving at a strong pace and it covers so much ground without breaking sweat.
The Ancients
Warning: probably only for the big history nerds. My ancient history degree is sometimes needed on this one, but the detail in it is wonderful.
Revisionist History
If history is all about the changing interpretation of past events, then this podcast optimises that. Get yourself a cup of tea and a biscuit and disappear into Malcolm Gladwell’s analysis.
In Our Time
How could you not include ‘In Our Time’, not least because you wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of Melvyn Bragg. Sets the standard on the roundtable discussion format.
The History of Rome
The original work from the host of the ‘Revolutions’ podcast, Mike Duncan, has dated a little, but not too much for you to still fully appreciate all 179 episodes. It’s an audio masterpiece.
Bonus: The Long View
This BBC podcast only posts sporadically, hence it not making the top seven, but it’s worth listening back to a few old episodes for the format alone.
[Caveat: this is totally unscientific, just based on things I’ve come across and admired]
